Educational Attainment by Employment Status, Ages 25-64, Cuyahoga County

Educational attainment is also connected to unemployment and labor force participation. Not only is the unemployment rate highest for people who did not finish high school, many of these people are not in the labor force at all, meaning that they are not engaged in the formal economy.

They may be paid under the table, staying home to care for a family member, a student, or not working for another reason. Adults who did not finish high school are 3.5 times more likely to be disconnected from the workforce as those who earned at least a bachelor’s degree. For Cleveland it’s an even bigger spread and people who did not finish high school are more than FIVE TIMES as likely to not be in the labor force as those with at least a bachelor’s degree.
