Ohio Poverty Rate by Age Group (1980-2018)
Ohio’s poverty rate has held steady over several decades, getting worse during the Great Recession and then stagnating. It is anticipated that Covid-19 will drive up the rates in 2021 significantly.
Part of the reason older adults are so much lower is how poverty is counted and the way policies are designed to help various groups make ends meet. But note that while overall poverty, child poverty, and working age have all gone down, older adults have remained steady.
NOTE:
Beginning in 2005, we started getting data on poverty every year from the U.S. Census Bureau. These trends are repeated at the local level.
