Potential exposure to lead

Most housing in Cuyahoga County was built before 1970, so people who live in them may be exposed to lead paint.

The use of lead-based paint for residential use was banned in 1978, but nearly all Cleveland housing was built before this change. Much of Cleveland’s housing stock could have lead-based paint throughout dwellings on walls, molding, exterior siding and in other areas. Without proper maintenance and upgrades, like vinyl siding, this toxin is open and accessible, posing significant and costly health threats to children.
